What’s the attraction: Once a bustling gold mining town in the late 1800s, the Victorian-era town features old saloons, churches, homes, museums, restaurants and shops.

Take in some area culture: There are a number of museums in the area to tour. One of them is the Saint Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church, a church still in operation and is open for visitors to tour everyday. There is a gift shop to check out and photographs on the wall for display. The historic Fourth Ward School and Museum is a four-story wooden schoolhouse built to accommodate more than 1,000 students. Sixteen classrooms still have original desks, maps and books. The Mark Twain Museum at the Territorial Enterprise features Mark Twain’s desk, chair, books and equipment of his pressroom. If you’d like to hang out with the old spirits of Virginia City, take a tour of the Washoe Club Haunted Museum.
