What’s the attraction: Garrapata State Park, located just a few miles south of Carmel, may be one of Big Sur’s best-kept secrets.

While the nearby Point Lobos State Nature Reserve and the winding, scenic views along Highway 1 seem to attract larger crowds, that means Garrapata offers a secluded, uncrowded and undeveloped destination for hikers, where trails winding through wildflowers, cacti and redwood groves rise up to offer stunning views of the ocean.
