In 1927, the William Land Park Zoo in Sacramento featured 40 animals. The Sacramento Zoological Society formed in 1958 to raise funds for the zoo and in the early 1960s, the zoo was enlarged to its current size of 14.2 acres.
It became Sacramento Zoo in 1970 and after several renovations and expanded exhibits, the zoo is now home to a variety of animals in natural habitat settings. Tonja Candelaria, public relations coordinator for the zoo, took some time on a recent afternoon to talk about what the zoo has to offer its visitors.
