Where: San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust, 11605 Old Friant Road, Fresno.
When: Evening half-day tours run from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, and Aug., 16, Sept. 13 and Sept. 27. Morning half-day tours run from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, and Aug. 17, Aug. 31 and Sept. 7. Full-day tours are by appointment.
Cost: $25 for Short Half-day tours; $35 for Long Half-day tours and $45 for Full-day tours.

Considerations: Children must be at least 10 years old and weigh 50 pounds for downriver tours, and must be 6 years old for calm-water tours. All tours include canoe equipment, safety equipment, dry bags and canoeing instruction from trained guides. Tours may be canceled due to low enrollment, weather and hazardous river conditions.

Summer is a time for exploration. It’s warm, bright and just radiates an aura of adventure. It encourages us to conquer mountains, tame wilderness and swim the deepest oceans — OK, for some of us anyway.
For the rest of us, a call to the great outdoors doesn’t mean we must offer up life or limb to the calling. We can experience our environment and learn a little bit about our history in less extreme ways and still fulfill that need for the warm feeling of heat on our skin and the exhilaration of an active day full of sunshine and exercise.
