What’s the attraction: Located in the heart of the Central Valley in Hilmar, the Hilmar Cheese Company was founded in 1984. The company began production in 1985 and produces more than 2.4 million pounds of cheese each day. Some of the cheeses include Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, Colby and Mozzarella. In 1998, the company opened its visitor center, which provides free self-guided and guided tours for schools and families.
Learn how cheese is made: Before taking a self-guided tour, you can watch an educational movie, “Lights, Camera, Cheese.” Afterwards take a tour the building, which offers a variety of hands-on exhibits to explore. Some of the fun things to see include a dairy model and a full size cow. After learning everything there is to know about cheese, you can participate in an ice cream activity, where you can create and eat your own ice cream.
