What to know before tossing the clubs

Whether a seasoned golfer or hitting a course for the first time, everybody struggles at times with certain aspects of their game. With that in mind, following is a list of some things everyone can use to improve their game.

How do I know if clubs are the right size for my body frame?: This is the most important thing about golfing. First you can tell you have the wrong size by your divot if it is deep at y our toe or heel and second is by the flight of the ball. If you’re too upright the heel will hit and club face will hit the ball face down, causing a hook. If you’re flat the toe will hit and the heel will open the club up, causing a fade or slice.

How should I rotate as I swing?: A good swing always starts with the upper body and the arms and shoulders need to have a good rotation. Get the body guiding the arms back and take the hands and arm out of the initial takeaway. As the body starts to turn and the arm swings down coordinate your hip turn as the arm swings forward.

How should I play out of the ruff?: The ball has a tendency to come out with not a lot of spin and goes further then you expect it to. First, and foremost, get out of the ruff. Don’t have too much grass between the face of the club and the ball where the ball becomes a flyer. Concentrate on solid impact.

How should I grip the club?: There are three different grips — the bardon (overlapped), interlocked (like Tiger Woods), and 10-finger (like baseball).

A beginner should use a 10-finger grip and intermediates should use the bardon.

How do I select the right club for the right shot?: It depends on how far you hit each club. You have to know how far you each club and how many yards you need to hit the ball.

How important is a backswing?: You have to have a backswing. And, it should be straight away.

— Robert Lopez

How should I grip the club when putting?: Comfort is most important. There is no one right way.
