Since 2005, the Knowlton Gallery in Downtown Lodi has been showcasing some of the best regional artists.

It has always been gallery owner Robin Knowlton’s goal to promote art and artists who focus on the Central Valley as a subject in their works.

“I represent nationally recognized artists primarily from this region — the Foothills, Sonoma, Chico, San Francisco — that is my focus,” Knowlton said.

Walls of the intimate upstairs gallery are home to an ever-changing array of images that capture sunset orange glows on the Delta, long blue shadows stretching out over verdant fields, noonday sunlight striking a roadside produce stand and just about any other scene of this area of the state. The gallery itself is bathed in abundant sunlight from its north-facing windows, lending a softness to the space.

Shows at the Knowlton change about every two months, and new exhibits are introduced by an opening reception on Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. The featured artist is normally in attendance, and will give a talk or demonstration.

Knowlton sells work directly from the gallery, and all across the country on her website Fine art connoisseurs have even traveled directly to Lodi to purchase works.

“I am a destination,” Knowlton said of her business.

One couple recently visited from the city of Concord to purchase a piece from the show “Hidden Symmetries” a collection by Deladier Almeida.

The couple have followed Deladier’s work, and found out about the show at the Knowlton. They came specifically to purchase one of the oil paintings in the collection.

“It’s exciting for me to see that,” Knowlton said.

But it isn’t just exhibits that draw the artistic enthusiasts. The artists themselves will give lessons at various times. Specific classes can be anywhere from three to five days, and most are available for registration a year in advance. Since the class sizes are limited to 15 people, and tend to fill up quickly, it’s recommended to sign up as early as possible.

It’s Knowlton’s belief that art is vital to any community, not only for the draw it creates, but for how it represents an area.

“I’m very passionate about this region of California,” Knowlton said. “It’s been overlooked.”
