Micke Grove Zoo is filled with unique animals and attractions for children and adults alike.

The nearly endangered spider monkeys, known for hanging by their prehensile tails, might fascinate some visitors. Others could spend time observing the 15-year-old mountain lion, the zoo’s most popular animal. They could also listen to the yellow-knobbed curassow sing.

Micke Grove Zoo features an array of animals from numerous habitats from around the world.

On display are the smallest deer species from South America, birds from the Mediterranean area, tortoises and lemurs from Madagascar and many more animals.

The zoo, built more than 50 years ago, also hosts many events and programs for children and adults.

“With the animals we have here and the community that visits us on a regular basis, it’s really important that we provide as many recreational activities (as possible) for them,” said Allison Meador, educational director at Micke Grove Zoo.

Micke Grove Zoo After Dark is a popular event, which features games, crafts, storytelling, a campfire and more.

The zoo also holds a summer camp for children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

“The zoo is a great, safe place for members of the community to come and bring their children,” Meador said. “That’s been a really popular program.”

The zoo is located inside Micke Grove Park, at 11793 N. Micke Grove Road in Lodi. It’s open every day except Christmas, rain or shine. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Tickets are $4 for adults, $2 for youths 3-17 years old, and free for children 2 years old and younger.
