Favorite place to eat: If I am going out to dinner with my wife Shelby, we like The Dancing Fox. It has great food, a great environment and great pies for dessert.

One thing not to miss: I would take friends out to Oak Farm Vineyards on DeVries Road. Not only can you enjoy hanging out with a glass of wine on a weekend afternoon, but your kids can enjoy the big grassy area, the private cemetery from a hundred years ago and the bass pond in the back of the property for a little bass fishing.

Favorite outing in Lodi: My wife and I love to kayak from Lodi Lake up the Mokelumne River in the early morning. Even though we paddle past houses on the river from time to time, it feels peaceful and far away, even though it is less than a mile from our house.

One secret most outsiders don’t know: During the fall and winter, if you take a quick drive west on Woodbridge Road beyond Interstate 5, you will see thousands of Sandhill cranes nesting. Show up at sun down and the noise is deafening from birds flying in for the night.

Something quirky but cool about Lodi: I would have to say the annual Parade of Lights in early December. I am amazed that year after year, rain or shine, thousands of people line the streets downtown to watch every type of vehicle drive by with Christmas lights.
