- Tsui family at a glance

In 1979, Yee and Cheuk Tsui left the bu stling life of Hong
Kong and moved to an Oregon town named Coquille, with 5,000
residents. They were ready to start a family and a family
restaurant, and they wanted to do it in the United States.
Cooking was something both Yee and Cheuk had been raised in.
“They grew up cooking,” said their son, Bill Tsui.
Bill Tsui, 28, who works at Haru Sushi, the family’s restaurant
in Lodi, was born in the United States. He and his sister, Angela,
and brother, David, have been raised in the restaurants.
Haru Sushi keeps the family busy seven days a week, but it has
also become a way for the family to become more tight-knit. Though
the Tsui family lives in Sacramento, most of their time is spent in
Lodi, where they work and enjoy sashimi and sushi together
daily.
“We have that family bond that keeps us grounded,” Bill Tsui
said.

A big smile hardly leaves Yee Tsui’s face as she greets her
customers in the dining room after preparing their elaborate sushi
rolls behind a glass counter.
“I really appreciate my customers. Thank you so much,” she says,
pressing the palms of her hands together and bowing her head in
gratitude. “When people are happy, I’m so happy.”
