Dickey’s roots are in Dallas, Texas, where Travis Dickey opened his first barbecue pit in 1941. Dickey’s original menu was limited to beef brisket, pit hams, barbecue beans, potato chips, beer, bottled milk and sodas.
Brothers Roland Dickey and T.D. Dickey, Jr. took over the business in 1967 and began expanding it throughout the Dallas and Forth Worth area.
Dickey’s began franchising in 1994 and today it is the world’s largest BBQ franchise.

- Held upper management positions with Grand Auto and Kragen.
- Built and then sold a string of Papa Murphy’s pizza outlets in Northern California.
- Helped create the “Dinner My Way” concept in which customers buy ingredients for meals at home.
- His family also owns Oh My Yogurt in the Walmart shopping center, a short distance from Cockrum’s new Dickey’s Barbecue Pit.
- Married to Kathleen; three children, Steven, 21, who works with his dad at Dickey’s; Melanie, 19, who attends California Lutheran College; and Carlee, 17, who attends Lodi High School.

Created in Texas, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is now in Lodi, offering up slabs of ultra-tender brisket, creamy macaroni, and even a cup of complimentary ice cream for those with extreme capacity.
Dickey’s opened in September in the Lowe’s Shopping Center. It’s a bright, well-scrubbed eatery with wagon wheel-style light fixtures, country-western on the sound system, and the slightly sweet smell of hickory-smoked brisket filling the air.
