Lodi police shot a shoplifting suspect Tuesday night after the suspect became combative and injured two officers in the 400 block of North Sunset Drive, according to Lt. Sierra Brucia.

The suspect was in surgery as of 11 p.m. Tuesday night. One officer may have a broken arm, and the status of the second officer was not yet available. Both officers were expected to be OK.

The incident began when officers were investigating a report of shoplifting from a call they received at 7:59 p.m.

Officers made contact with the suspect at 8:28 p.m., but the suspect came at officers with a bat, Brucia said. Officers first struck the man with a Taser, and then fired their weapons multiple times, Brucia said. A K-9 was also on scene, but it was unclear if it had been deployed.

There was no further information available Tuesday night.
