Clements meeting focuses on rural crime

Although the rural town of Clements about 12 miles east of Lodi hasn’t been hit hard by crime at local ranches, law enforcement authorities gave advice to residents on how to avoid being a crime victim.

Crime in Clements to be addressed Thursday

Public safety issues will be addressed by representatives from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s and District Attorney’s offices at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Clements fire station, 18901 Highway 88 at Mackville Road.

John Anderson revives struggling Clements-Lockeford Chamber of Commerce

Like cats, the Clements-Lockeford Chamber of Commerce seems to have nine lives. The business organization was rescued from the dead in 2006 when Timothy Fowler became its president and Cynthia Haynes its chief executive officer.

Clements Stampede canceled

Due to a lack of sponsors to contribute money for the event, the Clements Stampede Rodeo Committee decided to cancel its annual rodeo scheduled for Sept. 10.

Stampede committee members held 20 meetings during a 13-month period to organize the event, and they are saddened that they are unable to move forward this year, according to committee secretary Linda Fields Stiehr.

Group interested in forming charter school at Clements site

The Visionary Institute of Math and Science Education Group's board of directors requested local consultant Jack Bray contact the Lodi Unified School District Board of Education regarding its intention to submit a charter petition for an elementary charter school for the visual and performing arts in collaboration with the Valley Sierra California Arts Project.

San Joaquin County Planning Commission approves stable to be built in Clements

The San Joaquin County Planning Commission approved a use permit to allow a 25,000-square-foot stable for up to 20 horses in Clements on Thursday night. Commissioners voted 3-0 to approve the project.

Clements losing part of its history with elementary school closing

Jeanne Vetter began her teaching career at Clements Elementary School alongside Highway 88 more than 50 years ago — before it ever joined Lodi Unified School District.

The small schoolhouse has been a part of the community for more than twice that length of time, but at the end of this school year, its doors will be forever closed.

The Lodi school board voted 6-0 Tuesday to shutter the tiny rural campus and move its 60 students to Lockeford School. That campus, roughly four miles away, has been upgraded with kindergarten classrooms and a new playground.

Case dropped against Clements resident Robert Mehrten accused of bank robbery

Charges against Robert Mehrten, the Clements resident accused of robbing the Bank of the West on East Highway 88 in Lockeford in January, have been dropped, according to a spokesperson for the San Joaquin Superior Court.

Clements School likely to close; other schools may be saved

Lodi Unified School District trustees appear poised to save $91,272 by closing Clements School and moving kindergartners to nearby Lockeford School next year, but weren’t ready to move forward with closures of other small schools Tuesday.

Clements pedestrian struck in weather-related collision

A vehicle hit a pedestrian at about 11 p.m. Saturday at Highway 88 and Mackville Road in Clements, according to the Clements Rural Fire District.
