Green Tourism. It is a concept that some people have a hard time getting their mind around. You’re not alone. Even I don’t fully understand it, but it is a growing buzz-word in the travel industry. So what does it mean to be a “green” destination?
Simply put, a green destination offers environmentally-friendly visitor services. Take a hotel, for example. A hotel that treats and re-uses waste water, packages their shampoo and toiletries in recyclable materials, has refrigerators and mini-bars with low-energy ratings, and installs special low-water shower-heads and toilets could say that they have green practices. But can they truly call themselves green? At what point is a destination considered green?
