Darlene Machado is the owner of the Hollywood Family Cafe on Cherokee Lane. She spoke with the News-Sentinel on Thursday about how her experiences in the food service industry and people who inspired her. Below is a lightly edited interview with her responses.

First job: My first job came when I was 12 years old working at La Morenita Restaurant. She had come here from Mexico with three children and started her own enterprise. I grew up working with her. Her daughter and I were best friends. She took me to work with her one day and I started bussing tables there.
