It's a blessing to find these people (or have them introduced to you) who have a lesson to teach us all. We can get so caught up in our lives, imagining that we are all alone in our situations, and that our problems are insurmountable. When we hear of someone like Stephanie, it wakes us up to the fact that there are always people with far worse problems, and those who have met those problems head up and shoulders back. They know that what they do have is the most important thing to focus on, and to always be grateful for that.
I believe that these people are here to teach a lesson, if you are wise you will listen. You can thank them by learning their lesson, and becomming one who can teach it as well.
