If you pay attention, there are a lot of things in this world that just make you go "Hmmmm....."

I'm driving down Hutchins Street and there is a young man pushing a toddler in an umbrella stroller. It was a nice day so there was nothing unusual about that. What caught my eye was that this early 20-something father was having great difficulty with his assignment. You see, in addition to pushing the stroller he was trying to smoke a cigarette and...and...(wait for it) hold up his seriously sagging pants. Apparently fatherhood came upon him so quickly that he didn't even have a chance to buy a belt. Something had to give in this situation, but he seemed reluctant to give up the cigarette, he couldn't let go of his pants and the stroller really did need two hands to maintain complete control. So there he was alternately pushing with his elbows, hitching up his drawers and smoking. If this was his public image, I don't even want to imagine the private one.

Odd visual #2 came when I was circling the onramp in Elk Grove to get on Highway 99. I needed to slow down to let a completely normal looking 50-ish man walk across the ramp to the other side. As he passed I noticed he had a license plate on his behind. A real California plate. Ithad 2010 tags sohe had obviously kept his registration current. Do you suppose he had to be "smogged"?

#3 actually came last fall, was more refreshing and just made me smile. I was driving down Church Street toward Turner Road (I see a theme here). Crossing the street in the crosswalk in front of me was a blind gentleman with a dog. I have seen this pair before but today was different. The man held the biggest and most beautiful bouquet of flowers I had ever seen. The bouquet was a riot of colors and floral varieties. The dog dutifully led the way while the man walked, pitched forward, his face nearly in the arrangement. And he wore an expression of sheer bliss, as if he knew his treasure was supremely beautiful. I can still see this scene and when I do, I feel good all over.

So remember while you're driving around out there: All the world's a stage. Enjoy the show.
