I'd like to change my answer to Dad's. Sometime Gina will begin to "dump" and I realize I haven't been listening...my go to move is usually, "No they don't." That usually works like 20% of the time.

I like to smile at them, and tell them I just got new socks!

Often times when you start to "dump" I'll stare understandingly, smile from time to time and wait patiently for you to end your sentence. But deep inside the caverns of my mind..I'm thinking "Wow! Tony Gwinn had a lifetime batting average of 335! When are the niners going to get back to their glory years?...and MAN! beer goes good with steak!" So you see?...rest your troubled mind!...you're really NOT dumping on me! You just continue to open your heart, bare your soul and I'll continue to smile, wait patiently and.. "do you think the Giants have any chance at a reapeat! Who eats hamburgers without cheese anyway?" (Don't thank me...Its what a kind, loving, and compassionate person does ;-)

K — No bag needed here. People who care about you will listen to your issues, problems, jokes, stories . . . whatever it is because we love you. And to quote my own self from my blog entitled "Time to get my snark on . . ." When someone asks how you're doing, then they should want to know — even if it means a sit-down and a bit of a story.

"And the flip side if this coin: If you ask someone how they're doing, make eye contact and stop moving long enough to get a response. It is, after all, a question. Wait for an answer. Show interest. Otherwise don't ask, because you really don't care how they're doing."

So don't feel guilty about telling people how you're doing. Some of us really want to know!

Sometimes people have to understand what they are getting into when they ask, "How are you doing?" If you don't want to know, stick to the old stalwarts, "Hello" and "Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening"

You have to have the little dump moments throughout the week or you just end up venting for hours every evening to your significant other. Contrary to some opinions, that is not what they are there for.
