Supporting A Friend

Just fifteen months ago, I was the one who wasn't sure how I would handle my son leaving for Navy Boot Camp. Then last month, one of my best friend's sonswent off to Air Force Boot Camp, and now I am on the other side, trying to be there for her.

The First Call Home.....

Note: I should begin with an apology to readers of Lisa's Home Front blog. It's not my intention that Christi and I dominate this forum. Many families have sons and daughters and friends in the service. And I'm sure Lisa would love to have more reflections. Some of the letters that service people send home aren't so personal (or such security risks) that they can't be shared with neighbors and friends back home. I hope this entry encourages others to contribute to the Home Front.

Boot Camp Approaches by Guest Blogger Christi Kennedy Weybret

Irritated, I stared at the truck keys, wallet, scattered coins and sunglasses that my 21-year-old son had tossed unceremoniously on my clean kitchen counter. With a sigh, I started to gather it all. And then I stopped.

Still Learning about the Military

I have a friend I made thru N4M.com, her husband was in Great Lakes, IL with my son while they were training for their chosen Special Ops jobs. Her husband has been in the Navy for around 10 years and had worked very hard to be recommended to the training in Great Lakes. He went to San Diego with his class and while he worked very hard at completing this very difficult training, he chose to not complete the training at this time.

New Support For Vets

I received the following email from a friend and felt it was something I wanted to share. We as a country don't always support our veterans of war very well, especially when we might not agree withthe war they are sent to fight. Because of this it is important to remember they don't decide where and why they fight. Their decisionwas to serve their country. With this in mind, please take a minute to read through the information below.

The Economy and Military Recruitment

I have been hearing some interesting information lately regarding the number of young people trying to enlistin the military, "trying" being the operative word in that sentence.

Learning to let go......

I had an eye-opening experience last week. I joined a group of N4Ms (Navy for Moms.com) friends in Southern California to watch as our sons/husbands/boyfriends completed a grueling week of training.

Patriotism in a Surprising Place

I was at a wedding a week ago for one of my best friend's daughter. Their new son-in-law is active duty Air Force stationed in Georgia and the young couple had decided they wanted to be married before he was deployed toward the end of February.

The Unsung Heroes

There are many in the military that don't get the recognition that they should, mostly because their jobs are meant to done without anyone knowing. In the past week, someone shared with me an article about the Navy SEALs, SEALs are a part of this unknown world of the military.

Enlistment Question......

Enlisting is an exciting time for the person going through the process, the choices, and the opportunities shown to you. For the parents it is a time of wondering if your young adult really understands the consequences of their choice, knows what to ask, and how to read a contract.

Boot Camp - The Good, The Bad, and the Funny

My last blog entry focused on the feelings as a mom as your child gets to boot camp, what they experience and how everyone adjusts and learns to cope with a child who is now being broken down and rebuilt as a soldier, seaman, or airman. While the branch of service might be different the feelings and experiences are very similar.

A Veteran's Day Salute

Veteran's Day is a U.S. holiday celebrated on November 11, honouring veterans of the U.S. armed forces and those killed in battle. Originally called Armistice Day, it began as a commemoration of the ending of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918. After World War II it was recognized as a day to pay tribute to all service members, and in 1954 it was designated as Veterans Day. It is usually observed with parades, speeches, and flowers placed on military graves and memorials. The holiday is called Remembrance Day in Canada and Remembrance Sunday (on the Sunday nearest to November 11) in Britain.

Boot Camp: The Good, the Bad, and the Funny

My son arrived in Great Lakes, IL at the Navy's Recruit Training Command (RTC) on May 20th, 2008. It was the beginning of his military career! It was also the beginning of our life as a military family and oh what a ride it has been.

Military Support Links

Just a quick post with the link to the new Air Force Dads website (remember anyone with a loved one in the Air Force will be welcomed) that I referenced in my last blog. I also thought it would be nice tohaveall the links to other military websites that have been posted as comments in one place so they are easy to find!

My son went to the Navy and I got NavyforMoms.com

My son left for Navy boot camp on May 19, 2008. The ride to drop him off at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Sacramento was weird. The military is full of acronyms, MEPS is where they swore him in, processed him, did the final physicals and gave him his plane ticket for Great Lakes, IL. We talked like nothing was happening as he took his SIM card out of his phone and put it in his wallet. All he would be able to keep with him after arriving was his wallet, a small amount of money, a bible, and a religious medal. I am pretty sure that he was more upset about leaving his cell phone for 8 weeks than he was about leaving us. I was told to expect a box with all his clothes, shoes, shave kit, and anything else he had with him. I was sure when that box arrived it would be like he had died and I was getting his belongings. But a funny thing happened, I was on the Recruit Training Command website, aka Boot Camp, and there was a badge on the site that said NavyforMoms.com with pictures of Moms and their kids saying a place for moms with kids in the Navy and moms who have been there. I couldn't believe it, a website that had exactly what I was looking for.

I am a Navy mom

I am a Navy mom. It is a title I never thought I would have until my oldest son came home from his 1st year of community college in Southern California and said he had decided to join the Navy. He had found what he was supposed to do in life; he was going to be a Navy SEAL.
