Is it the socks?
ELK GROVE -- The goal was not a fashion statement.
All Jannell Hadnot wanted was to make sure her cleats were and snug, regardless of her socks' colors.
So there she stood, after winning the Sac-Joaquin Section triple jump title -- on her right food, a thick, fuzzy, black-striped sock; and on her left, a slick one with purple stripes.
On a day that the Tokay junior ruled, so did her preference for comfort.
Coordination, be damned.
"I really don't know. I've always mismatched my socks, forever," a giggling Hadnot said after accepting her medal. "They're pretty snug, so I guess they help me. I usually try to wear thick socks, just for comfort."
And just how comfortable were they?
"On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd say a 9.5."
The only thing better was her triple jump performance, as she set a new personal mark with 39 feet, 8.5 inches.
Now, with next week's trip to the state championship meet looming, Hadnot has time to think about her next combination.
More likely that not, though, it will be a game-time decision -- not that strategy has done her wrong so far.
"Whatever is clean," she said. "I don't know, socks are like the last thing on my mind."
