After the outbreak of World War II, a government booklet, “Make do and Mend,” was published to give people tips on how to live frugally. Seventy years later, a modern edition has been made. Here are some of its tips:
• Freeze leftover pieces of cake until you have enough to make a trifle.
• Unwrap a new bar of soap and store it among towels and bedding. Not only will the soap scent the linen but it will harden it to make it last longer.
• Shine up shoes using the inside of a banana skin. After they dry, buff them off with a soft cloth.
