I had a ball last week shaking the hands of the recipients of Tokay High School's first-ever Block Ts for academic excellence.

Just so you know, a "Block T" is a letter, like Tokay High athletes receive for making the varsity team. Academic stars can wear the letter on a "letterman jacket" now, like the athletes often do. Students have to have a 3.8 GPA (high A) average to receive a letter for their academic achievement.

The idea of giving out a letter for studying hard first came to the Lodi Schools from the counselors at Lodi High. I've got a request in for their recipients who were lauded in October.

These top Tokay students received letters Friday, Dec. 16:
