Buzz Eggleston is retiring as editor of the Calaveras Enterprise.

Never take newspapers, freedom of speech, or democracy for granted. Stand up and defend them, not for their sake, but for your own.

- Buzz Eggleston, former editor of the Calaveras Enterprise.

After more than three decades and writing or editing thousands for news stories, my colleague and friend Buzz Eggleston is retiring.

It's a loss for journalism and the Mother Lode.

Buzz has had a rich career. We worked together at the Palo Alto Times, where he was the alpha reporter. His features, such as one on a dog awaiting euthanasia, evoked tears. His reporting was aggressive but fair. He ended up winning major awards for an investigation into problems at the VA hospital.

Buzz was a newsroom leader, too, the fellow who organized parties and fishing trips. He was the guy who pulled together an impromptu bachelor's party for me at the Oasis, a Menlo Park beer joint, before I married Judy.

We've stayed in touch through the years, connected by shared experiences and what is a marrow-deep, near-obssessive passion for journalism.

He's been a journalistic rock for more than 25 years in the Lode, first leading the newsroom of the Sonora Democrat before taking over at the Enterprise.

He's from the old school, focused on journalistic accuracy and integrity. The quote above is from one of his final columns for the Enterprise.

When I need advice, or just a chance to bounce ideas around, I often call Buzz. He's a stalwart, both personally and professionally.

The good news: Buzz is not giving up journalism. He has some book plans and he'll consult for the Enterprise from time to time.

He's also agreed to pick up the phone when I need a sounding board.

Here is a link to his summing-up column by Buzz that includes the quote above:
