Emma Greene update: Stable and getting stronger
Posted on
October 5, 2011
Some great news: Emma Greene's follow up surgery on Monday was a
success and she's recovering and gaining strength.
That's the latest from Emma's mom, Hayley, who said Emma is
awake and conversant at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at
Stanford. (Emma suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, which affects the
respiratory system.)
Emma, Lodi High's valedictorian for the class of 2011, had been
waiting nearly two years for a lung and liver transplant. That
surgery happened Saturday and a much less complex follow-up
operation was Monday.
Those are the basics. Cathy Huckaby, a nurse, close friend of
the Greene's, and all-around terrific gal, shared the following
info., which includes more detail:
This is what I just posted on facebook:
I just got off the phone with Hayley (her mom)...Emma is now off
the ventilator & breathing on her own (with a wee bit of
Bipap-Oxygen). She has only 2 IV's now (several have been taken
out), and she was able to have some crushed ice this AM...all kinds
of progress! She's talking w/ her parents, and asking about people
and how what exactly happened to her the last few days. She is
taking deeper breaths and getting used to her new lungs.(!) Her
incision is healing well (she only had one long one). Being the
tough gal that she is, she doesn't ask for pain medication very
often...(she has a PCA Patient Controlled Analgesia) so she can
push a button and get excellent pain meds IV for quick relief). She
can move her arms and legs weakly...strength is coming back slowly
and she tried to scoot herself up in bed this morning. Her parents
Mic & Hayley are spending every minute w/ her and Stanford has
generous visiting hours... they of course are weary, but very
encouraged with this progress. They moved from a local hotel to the
Ronald McDonald house, which is only $10 a only a night (!) There
is a window in her ICU room, and they can see black squirrels &
birds from it. So great news all along the way.
