Very sad to read the obituary for Janet Pruss, who passed away Aug. 1.

Janet and her husband, Walter, who died in 2004, were wonderful people and diligent Lodi citizens.

I first met them when I came to Lodi as a bureau chief for The Record. Janet and Walter attended nearly every Lodi City Council meeting. Walter, especially, was a frequent visitor to the Carnegie Forum lecturn, asking questions and sometimes offering comments.

I suppose they could be described as ‘gadflies’ but that term somehow doesn’t sound right applied to Janet and Walter.

Without fail, they were gracious and genial. There was no pettiness about them.

And they never struck me as particularly political. They seemed interested in what was best for the greater good, the greater community.

I’ve attended hundreds of government meetings in my career. Usually those who show up have a special — often financial — interest.

Janet and Walter Pruss had a special interest, too: The Lodi community.
