We're celebrating a bit of bright news today: Thursday's News-Sentinel page one design, featuring the America's Cup, was selected as a Top Ten winner by the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

Our news editor, Kyla Cathey, designed the front, including a striking (and super-vertical) photo of the Oracle Team USA catamaran below the Golden Gate bridge. The photo and story ran against a black screen. It was a smart and eye-catching design, reflective of Kyla's talents.

Among newsies, being included in the Newseum's Top Ten is an honor; papers from all over the country submit their covers each day (or evening, depending on publishing cycle) for display on the Newseum website and consideration for the Top Ten. For anyone interested in news design, scanning through front pages from Bangor to Bakersfield is a fun glance at a trove of excellent work.

Our last Top Ten cover featured Lodi Living Editor Sara Jane Pohlman's story on exploring a butterfly display at the Grape Festival and overcoming her fear of the dainty creatures. Her story, and excellent pics by photo chief Dan Evans, were blended into an artful cover package by Matt Wilson, our newly appointed assistant news editor. The kicker: This was Matt's very first front-page design for us.

I am reminded again of this: I am lucky to work with such talented and good people.
