Just back from career day at Lodi Middle School.

What a hoot.

This was carefully organized. They even set up a little waiting room for the guests with Starbucks coffee and pieces of fruit.

The teachers, Tarina Taylor, Stacy Nelson and Tony Moles, were welcoming and gracious.

The students were just, well, terrific.

I had a student, Yesenia, serve as my personal shepherd. She gently guided me from class and class and even introduced me to the students.

That girl is going places.

The students asked great, honest, questions such as, “What is the quirkiest story you have ever written? Did you ever think about switching jobs? Why has there been such a change from paper to online?”

Let’s face it. Newspapers aren’t exactly in a full-throttle hiring mode these days, and may not be again. So I suggested the students focus on communications skills that are transferable to many careers. Writing. Reading, Researching. Working with people. Staying up with digital communications, such as Twitter and Facebook. Also: Find mentors and, when the time comes, start building your network.

Not sure what the future holds job-wise, but I know for these kids, it is bright.

And while it is true Lodi Middle has taken some public lumps lately, this was quite apparent to me: There is real excellence on this campus.
