Soup in the business bowl, again

The mere fact I got out of the office is a sign of the times.

As advertising director Tracy Kelley and I made our way around town recently — we were handing out plaques in our Reader's Choice Awards — there was a consistent theme of hope for this economy.

Les Wagner at Les' Appliance is feeling wind in his sails and so is Larry Underhill at Statesman Realty.

Here at the Sentinel we've had our first profit in the last nine quarters. Look for a record breaking 76-page edition of our annual Discover Lodi magazine later this month. A great job by all departments.

Not all advertising segments are strong. Legal advertising, specifically foreclosure notices, are declining. That, my fellow homeowners, is good news not bad.

This morning I had an upbeat chat with Jim Roster at Lakewood Meat and Dennis Cunnington of Bruce's Tires stopped by with a smile on his face.

Yes, Dennis said, things are picking up a little.

"It's kind of like eating soup with a fork."

But at least there's some soup in the bowl, right Dennis?

Another positive comment from Doug. He's just always unicorns & rainbows isn't he!

What? No backhanded comment about how the LNS got off easy on the water pollution case Doug? No mention of GOB's or secret meetings at W&R? No "Three Ayemigos" reference?

    Doug, you're slipping.

Your magazine is nothing but a cheap rendition of Lodi Monthly.
