If you missed it Sunday, go on the Internet and read the Sacramento Bee's investigative piece on construction problems on the new East span of the Bay Bridge.

Here's the link.

The newspaper dug and dug. It used the California Public Records Act to dig out documents CalTrans is obviously trying to hide. They hired their own engineers to help them interpret the data.

Bee reporter Charles Pillars wrote a crystal clear exposé of a monumental engineering miscalculation and shameful government blunder.

Today, Dan Walters makes the argument that when he was mayor of Oakland, Jerry Brown helped force CalTrans to dream up this grandiose and evidently unbuildable design.

That left the Bee and the rest of the news media as the only voices for public safety.

This is journalism's highest purpose.
