My youngest son Mike, a sophomore at San Diego State University, came home Friday for a Thanksgiving holiday and many of his friends have done the same.

Blake Roget, a fifth-year senior at CSU Long Beach, said all Wednesday classes were cancelled on that campus and all but two of her Monday and Tuesday classes, so she decided to come home for an extended holiday with her parents Randy and Arlene.

“Since I only had two classes, I talked to my professors and I figured it would be okay to skip them," she said.

Fees have been raised in order to balance the state's colleges and university budgets. But from the kids and the Internet, I've learned thatan elaborate plan of furlough days has been imposed to reduce employee compensation at the state's universities.

Some of the furlough days are discretionary and instructors have been randomly canceling classes.

"They can't even answer their e-mails on those days," said Blake. She wishes there had been more coordination.

"It would have been awesome if all (teachers) had chosen to utilize (furlough days) the week before Thanksgiving," said Blake.

A week-long Thanksgiving break was part of the schedule this year and last at CSU, Chico, according to sophomore Will Darsie. He too was driving home Friday to spend Thanksgiving with his folks Bill and Syd Darsie of Woodbridge.

Parents and students are paying higher fees; students are getting fewer days of education. But the blessing for some parents it their kids are coming home for a long holiday. It will be good to have them.
