I really appreciate every one of our Lodinews.com subscribers, and regret that subscribing may be more hassle than any of us bargained for.

We have a total of 119 online subscribers. Six only subscribe to Lodinews.com; 113 are Lodi News-Sentinel subscribers who have "linked their accounts" to the Lodinews.com database in order to receive totally free access to local news.

We haven't received many complaints yet, but it's driving me crazy having to continually log on in order to get past the "pay wall." The reason I have to do that, is I look at Lodinews.com with my home computer, office computer and iPad tablet. And every time I log on with one device, the software logs off the other devices.

This is going to be particularly frustrating for families who may share a subscription. Every time Mom logs on at work, Dad's Galaxy or the kids' smart phones are being kicked off.

It's a security thing, aimed at discouraging people from sharing their log-in info with their non-subscribing friends. It's a pretty standard policy at websites that charge a subscription fee, though Lodinews.com manager Simon Birch tells me the New York Times has decided to take down this feature.

Simon thinks he may have a work-around though it's pretty laborious on our end and would entail a frustrated subscriber calling in and asking us to set it up.

If this problem is bugging you, feel free to email me or Simon.

My email is m a r t w at l o d i n e w s . c o m . (Take the spaces out and add the "at sign." I wrote my address this way to defeat spammers.) Simon is p r o j e c t s at l o d i n e w s . c o m.

We'd love to hear from you about problems (or successes) regarding Lodinews.com.
