Update: I spoke to Hayley Greene Monday night at 6:30 and she said Emma is now in surgery for the follow-up procedure. This is required in about 15 percent of transplant cases, Hayley said, and is to address "oozing" of blood that results from the surgery and heavy use of blood-thinning medications.

I got to know Nick Cassesi, a wonderful man and dedicated volunteer, perhaps 16 years when I was The Record's bureau chief in Lodi. Nick was retired, volunteering for the Lodi Chamber of Commerce, full of good cheer and energy. It was impossible not to like Nick Casessi. Sadly, Nick passed away; this tribute to him from Ray Crow of the chamber captures a man of unique spirit.

A stalwart reader called Monday and he was not happy. We had a graphic, sex-related ad on our Web site, he said, and he was offended, From the way he described this ad, he was right to be. The ad apparently made a brief cameo appearance on our site, and vanished. I was unable to find it. The best explanation: It was provided by a third-party service that aggregates ads and then disperses them to various media sites, including ours, which share a portion of the revenue. Simon Birch, our internet services manager, assures me these ad services, including Google, have orders not to send sexually suggestive ads our way. One apparently slipped through. If you see another, please let us know: 369-7035.
