Like many families, mine looks forward to hunting for colored eggs courtesy of the Easter Bunny. As part of my duties as a grandmother, I do my part to supplement the Easter Bunny's stash.
But every time I make hard-boiled eggs, I shudder, remembering a day long ago. That day, as I pushed the latch down on the front door, returning from a trip to the store, the potent smell of sulfur hit me. Oh, no. The eggs! I forgot to turn them off before I left the house. The eggs had been cooking over an hour.
Racing into the kitchen, I was thankful to see no smoke or fire, but the awful smell of burned eggs was overwhelming. Coughing, I reached over and grabbed an oven mitt from the counter. Jamming my hand inside, I lifted the pan from the burner, heat radiating from the handle as I whisked the pan over to the sink.
The copper bottom glowed as red as the electric coil on the stovetop. When I dropped it in the sink, the pan sputtered and sizzled landing in a rectangular pan soaking in the sink. I gazed into the pan, now resting safely in a half-inch of water. The inside was bone dry with a gritty white substance encrusting the bottom. Clinging to the sides, I noticed scorched, discolored matter erupting from four cracked pieces of egg shell. Wait, I thought, something is wrong. I had put a dozen eggs on to boil. As I gazed around the kitchen, my eyes grew wide and my mouth flew open. Hundreds of tiny brown and yellow specks of egg and egg shells were clinging to the ceiling, walls, floor and countertop. Egg fragments were spattered from one corner of the kitchen to the other. Even the ceiling light fixture showed signs of egg debris. With a sigh, I knew I had my work cut out for me. I not only had to clean my kitchen from top to bottom, but boil another dozen eggs, because I knew the Easter Bunny was depending on me.
