Pastor Frank Nolton: As long as we are not discriminated against, we should be content at work

The News-Sentinel asked: According to a recent survey, more than a third of Americans report that their religion has not been accommodated in the workplace, or they’ve witnessed religion not being properly accommodated. How should workers respond when they feel their beliefs are not being respected at work?

I worked in the business world for 18 years before entering ministry and always held that we go to work to work, not to expect employers to accommodate our every want, including spiritual. With the wide variety of religions in the U.S., it would be almost impossible for an employer to have certain food available for every belief and to allow work schedules to fit every religious observance. As long as an employer doesn't discriminate against one's religious beliefs, we should be content.

I would read my Bible at my desk or led Bible studies during lunch times and never had a problem. Yet, I sometimes had to work when there was an activity at church, but knew that this was part of the job. The best way to honor God and be a testimony for Jesus Christ in the work place is to be a reliable, honest, pleasant, hard working employee who holds him/herself with integrity.
