It’s tempting for students to sleep in, tan and play video games all summer long, but this vacation can be a time to take advantage of opportunities you can’t get to during the school year.

These opportunities could make a difference and put you ahead of the pack when it comes time to apply to college or get a job. Take some time this summer to ponder your short and long-term goals and devise a plan of action on what you will do to get there.

Things to consider:

  • Make a list of every potential college and schedule tours with those you can get to.
  • Have a tough schedule next year? Start tutoring now. There are individuals, tutoring centers and online programs available in the summer months.
  • Involve yourself in community service. This is a way to give back and will also look good on college applications and resumes.
  • Take an online career interest survey. This is a great way to see if your career and technical interests match up with the path you have selected and might also give you other options to consider.
  • Get a job and start a savings account.
  • Try to schedule a “job shadowing” of careers that interest you. If available, try to line up an internship or day of job shadowing in that industry.
  • Read. Read. Read. (in greater lengths than 117 characters.) Set a personal goal to read at least one factual and one fictional book this summer.
  • Journal. Grab a notebook and write down your goals and aspirations. Put your thoughts on paper as to how you will be successful in these endeavors.
