The Tokay High School football team is off to an incredible season.  We've had a great preseason and our looking forward to some intense challenges for league play.  The two week break from school has given us an opportunity to practice hard and renew our enthusiasm.  The two week break also gave the Tokay football team a unique chance to give back to the community-the young, future football players in Lodi. We started a youth flag football league for students in grades kindergarten to third.  In this inaugural season we've had an incredible turnout with nearly 70 children participating.  The coaches are the Tokay High football players.  Each team of three coaches is responsible for nine children.  While we are teaching basic football skills the main goal is to get kids outside and active.  Learning to love the game of football is an added benefit.  The league is part of the NFL Flag Football Play 60 program that aims to end childhood obesity.

My wife and I decided to start the program when we couldn't find a quality flag football program for our six year old son to participate in.  He loves football and has grown up on the football field alongside me during practices and at games.  Each year he idolizes a new 'star' player and thinks they are just the 'coolest thing ever.'  Last year, with our super star girl kicker Bailey Smith, my daughter also jumped on the football bandwagon with her brother and loves the game too. This league offers the Tokay football players a chance to share their love of sports and football with the youth of Lodi.  After the first night of practice the coach-players were exhausted and definitely showed a new appreciation for coaching!

Watching kids of all ages running around on the football field makes me love this town and excited to see the Tokay football team reach out to the community and invest in the future. Come out and see these incredible athletes on October 18th at the Grape Bowl against West High School.  The flag football players will be joining their coaches out on the field prior to the game!
