I’m a journalist who knows how to ask questions that get answers. Never did I realize until this school year that the skills taught to me in college close to two decades ago would come in handy raising children.

How often do you ask your kids about their school day and receive a one-word answer? For example, “How was your day?” Their response, “Fine.”

Instead, try asking them specific questions like, “Who did you play with at recess?” Or, if you know what they’re studying, something like, “What word starts with the letter ‘m?” (I have a pre-kindergartner.) Or try thought-provoking ones such as, “What was your favorite part of your day?”

Good luck in getting answers next time you’d like to learn more about what your children do all day at school.
