Summer! Kids all across Lodi are humming the familiar mantra of summer, ‘No more teachers, no more books!’ At Tokay High School the beginning of summer also marked the end of an era.
Martha Dent is moving on to a new chapter and leaving a hole at Tokay. Martha Dent, Vice Principal Extraordinaire will begin at McNair High School for the 2013/2014 school year. Martha has been the Vice Principal at Tokay for 10 years. Prior to her reign as Vice Principal she served as the Japanese teacher for 16 years.
It was in this position that I first met Martha. I was a student in her Japanese class for four years at Tokay. I know firsthand the incredible power that Martha has to inspire and influence students to achieve. My high school years were not without tumult. My father unexpectedly passed away when I was a junior. My mother lived out of state, so I was left suddenly without a family.
My family became my teachers and coaches at Tokay. Martha and many others rallied around me. Martha showed me unconditional love and support when I most needed it. She is a ray of positive energy that always sees the bright side. I went on to college, always keeping in contact with Martha.
Upon graduation, Martha, always looking out for me, helped me realize what my own calling in life was. I chose to teach and coach. Following in the footsteps of my amazing mentor I hope that I can inspire my students in the same way that Martha has inspired me.
And while Tokay is going to feel the loss greatly, it is my duty and honor, as it is all of the teachers that have learned from Martha, to carry on her inspiring legacy. McNair, take care of our girl! She’s a special lady!
