It appears that health and driver’s education classes are on their way out of public education in Lodi. Though law requires some heath components to be offered, this instruction would fall upon the shoulders of the ninth grade PE teachers. Schools are also required by law to offer driver’s education, but it’s likely that students will choose to take the course online. There are plenty of options available starting under $10.00 and instead of 9-10 weeks sitting in a classroom, instruction time can be knocked out in a few hours time.

Questions to ponder:

Will PE teachers be able to adequately instruct these new components? Currently, LUSD employs health teachers that have a B.S. in Health Science or have passed the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) to prove competency in health science subject matter. (The PE teachers will be required to receive “training.”)

Do students really learn to think critically behind the wheel with an online course that can be rushed?

Before rushing to the decision that “driver’s education” instruction is not a big deal, think about the fact that it is the only high school subject that could take YOUR life, literally. Personally, I find it hard to believe that a computer can replace the passion of a teacher who helps teens think critically preparing them to be on the roadways.

* Please note that at this time, the school board is discussing removing Health and Driver's Education as a graduation requirement for students enrolled in AVID or AP Human Geography. If student chooses to enroll in family living or geography, the health and driver's education courses will remain a graduation requirement.
