My youngest child just entered middle school. This is an age where they have one foot in and one foot out of their academic independence.

The information below was sent to me from his history teacher, Mrs. Hummel. It’s important to stay involved, but still allow room for them to assert their own independence.

A checklist is the perfect way to make this transition smooth. I thought that it was worth passing along for any parent in the process of cutting the apron strings.

Procedures for success at home:

  • Eat a healthy snack and drink a glass of water.  Find a quiet place to work: kitchen table or desk.
  • Take out your planner and read what class work and homework was for that day.  It is always best to start on the most difficult work first.
  • Check to make sure your class work is complete.  If it is not complete, make sure to finish it before completing the homework assignment.
  • All work in the student workbook is to be done in pencil.  When we correct the work in class, we use pen.
  • If you have a question you cannot answer, be sure to come in to class before school starts so you can receive help.
  • After you finish the work for a class, put a check next to it in the planner and be sure to place the assignment in the correct section in your binder so you can find it easily the next day.
  • Refer back to your planner for the next assignment and keep working until all the work is complete.  Most students need about 2 hours to complete all their work for the 7 classes.
  • After you have verified that all your assignments in every class are complete, make sure everything you need is in your backpack before you go to bed.
