Many of the educational moments that stuck with me were not from teachers, but from guest speakers. There is something about hearing messages from people that have experienced the subject matter first hand that breaks down the classroom walls and plugs content matter into the real world.

That is exactly why I invited Rich Hanner to speak to the Jim Elliot High School speech class. As the News-Sentinel editor and communications instructor at Delta College, Mr. Hanner was able to shed a new light on the topic for the students.

He discussed everything from various media sources to career paths in communications. And he made learning a two-way street by listening to student input about how the Sentinel can encourage young readership.

If you have a career that can be shared with students, I encourage you to share your experiences. As the Learning Link coordinator, I can help direct you to speak with the right person to make it happen. Guest speakers bring a component to the class that no textbook can! Email
