An interesting press release from the state Department of Education found its way into my email inbox this week.

Apparently, for the first time ever, 10,000 high school graduates across California received gold seals on their diplomas certifying they had achieved proficiency in a language other than English

It's officially known as the State Seal of Biliteracy. Not only can these students speak another language fluently, they can read and write it, too.

While the most common language represented was Spanish, in sum there were 40 languages including sign language.

Do you know any students who received this first-in-the-nation honor? We'd like to hear about them.
