Ridiculous or Reasonable?

Understandably, campus safety is a big deal these days but where should administration draw the line?

In January, a 5th grader was reprimanded and searched after bringing a paper gun to school. It was 2-dimensional and resembled more of an “L” than a gun.

At another school, a 6 year old was suspended for making a gun gesture with his hand.

Most recently, a third school situation occurred that resulted in a 2-day suspension for a 7 year old. His offense? Taking bits off of his breakfast pastry so that is was shaped into a gun.

What do you think of all this? Are they justified in making a statement about the seriousness of the matter? Does the punishment fit the crime? How would you handle this as a parent if your child were to be the accused? Have you used these situations as teachable moments in your household?
