Should schools be encouraging more students to eat the free breakfast before school each day?

I wrote a story this week on the Breakfast Challenge. Students at Lodi, Tokay, Bear Creek and McNair high schools are trying to increase the number of kids eating breakfast at school. The school with the highest increase will get $3,000.

Some discussion has come up as to whether that's a good idea. The contest is sponsored by the California Milk Processor Board, and one commenter wondered if this is an industry ploy to create new milk customers for the future. Another thinks parents should try harder to feed kids breakfast at home.

What do you think? Is milk an essential part of breakfast? Does breakfast have to happen at home?
