I was kind of stunned this week to read about the woman angry (not to mention blameful) that her two fair-skinned daughters were sunburned while at a school event. She told USA Today that no one bothered to offer her girls sunscreen while at an all-day field day and as a result, they both returned home with bright red faces, according to photos she posted on a blog.

Apparently, many schools have policies that not only prohibit sunscreen -- which typically contains an over-the-counter drug -- but don't allow staff to apply the stuff either. And with good reason.

Children have all sorts of skin allergies nowadays. What if a school employee applied sunscreen and the child broke out in hives or worse, had to be rushed to the emergency room. As a mother, I'd risk the sunburn over that, for sure.

My 5-year-old just completed a two-week summer session through a private school where teachers sent home notices reminding us to apply sunscreen before sending our children to school each morning because they were not allowed to do so. It didn't take long to do before we headed out the door, and my litte fair-skinned boy didn't get burned.

And, really, in the end, whose job is it to see that your children are protected from the sun?
