It's not every day that students get to see the all-american success story standing in front of their classroom, but that's exactly what Cathryn Geyer's class participated in last week.

Through Partners In Education (PIE) efforts, Assemblymember Alyson Huber was scheduled as a guest speaker. With animated flare, she told the students her life story in five minutes. Being born into a family reliant on the welfare system, she lived in no less than 10 homes growing up. At an early age, she realized that she must create her own opportunities. Commuting to Lodi High School from a mobile home park in Tower Park, she knew that college was a necessity to open professional doors in her future.

Fast forward 40 years and you can learn that she put herself through college and law school and became the state Assemblymember representing the 10th District, which includes Lodi. Through personal experiences, she encouraged hard work and self-motivation, especially when you are working against the odds.

“Don't let the fear of the unknown hold you back from doing anything,” Huber inspirationally stated in relation to traveling unknown paths in life.

Students were given the opportunity to ask personal and professional questions. Each student left the classroom knowing that it doesn't matter who you are or where you start, shoot for the stars because dreams do come true.
