Polar Opposites

After attending two back to school nights at separate schools, I received a taste of 12 different personalities and teaching styles. There were a couple sets of teachers that I would dare to call polar opposites in their classroom management techniques and/or  class/homework expectations. Here are a couple of phrases that I heard throughout the nights. What do you think?

On Homework:

“I accept late work for half credit. I feel that if they do the work, even though it’s late, that they should receive some sort of reward for making an effort.”

“I will not accept any late work at all. Unless there is a cleared absence, all work must be turned in the day that it is due, without exception.”

On Managing the Classroom:

“I will never call a kid out and embarrass them in front of the class. I always try to give them their space and they usually notice that and are respectful back. If I do have a problem, I will quietly call them aside and have a conversation with them before anything else. I have few behavior problems in any of my classes.”

Though this was not directly said, there are certainly “no tolerance” teachers that are quick to sign the planners, hand out detentions and call a student to the plate in front of the class. I would hedge my bets that out of the 12 teachers, there is one like this.

What do you think is appropriate? Should students get credit for turning in late work? Do you feel that a teacher has the right to call out a student who is causing a disruption?

  • 8 Share what you know, and ask about what you don't.
  • 9 Don’t be a troll.
  • 10 Don’t reveal personal information about other commenters. You may reveal your own personal information, but we advise you not to do so.
  • 11 We reserve the right, at our discretion, to monitor, delete or choose not to post any comment. This may include removing or monitoring posts that we believe violate the spirit or letter of these rules, or that we otherwise determine at our discretion needs to be monitored, not posted, or deleted.
