Governor Jerry Brown released his proposed budget today that includes $12.5
billion in spending cuts over a year and a half year.
Brown said he plans to ask voters to extend a higher tax rate
for sales, vehicles and income over the next five years. Voters
already rejected a similar proposal in 2009.
He also plans to cut payroll and health options for state
employees in unions without contracts, resulting in $308 million in
savings.
Brown plans to cut $1.5 billion from welfare, $1.7 billion from
Medi-Cal, $500 million each from the University of California
and California State University Systems, $750 million from
services for the developmentally disabled and $200 million from the
state bureaucracy.
His plan also calls for the eventual elimination of redevelopment agencies. Galt has
a redevelopment agency that has contributed $4 million to a senior
housing center and paid for facade improvements for businesses.
The Lodi City Council has tried to move forward with
redevelopment several times, but has received resistance from the
public, most recently with Measure W in 2009.
