Talk of Liz and Audrey leads to ‘Soldier of Orange’
-
We were discussing Liz Taylor this week in the newsroom, and
eventually came around to a movie I greatly admire and strongly
recommend: "Soldier of Orange."

The MPAA: Worse than useless

(Note: Yes, I am about a day late in posting this, but I figure
better late than never. Enforcer Dan Evans is taking care of the
situation, as I promised he could strike me without repercussion
every time I’m late with an update. For our inaugural beating he
has chosen a kidney shot, and I plan to take it like a man. We
don’t play around here at Battle Royale.)

Let the Right Film In

To go along with Rich's entry earlier this week about the
Coen's remake of "True Grit" that surpassed the
original, I'd like to add another recent remake that should set
a standard.

The Skinny on Black Swan

Dan Evans

Last night I happened upon an episode of Inside Edition when a
report about Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" was
teased. Having just watched the movie and thinking it was one of
the best films of the year — and easily Natalie Portman's
finest performance — I stuck around to see the report.

Movies as good as the books

There are many book-to-movie projects that flop.

The book was better

With "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1"
releasing next week I have been thinking about movies based on
books.

Twenty movie scenes better than the scenes Jason picked.
-
All jabs aside, here is my list of top 20 movie scenes. Unlike
the others, though, I have no way of listing them an any kind of
order. The top three are my actual three favorite scenes, but after
that they are in no particular order.

Rich's three favorite scenes

OK, a worthy challenge. Jason offered up some interesting
choices, a bit on the blood-spattered side, perhaps, but an
ambitious list nonetheless.

And... scene!
-
Sure, it's easy to rattle off a list of your favorite movies
-- but what about your favorite individual scenes? This can be
tricky, because even your favorite films don't necessarily have
a specific scene that stands out above all others. And I'm not
talking about scenes you "like"; I'm talking about
the scenes that make you want to throw on a DVD at 3 a.m. when
you're tired and drunk and slovenly but can't bear the
thought of going to bed before you catch just that one scene... for
the 250th time.

Welcome to Battle Royale!
-
Hello, and welcome to Battle Royale, the News-Sentinel movie
blog for serious debate and discussion about all things
film-related. It will be a bit before we're totally and and
running, but in the meantime, take a few moments to check out these
brief profiles on our writers. Hopefully they will give you some
vague sense as to where we're all coming from in our differing
approahes to film, and maybe even spur a few friendly arguments.
Please enjoy, and check back very soon for our first feature: a
discussion of our favorite individual movie scenes of all time.
