September 25: The iPad. This submission clearly defines my love-hate relationship with technology. I love gadgets and gizmos. I love newspapers and books. I hate reading newspapers or books on gadgets and gizmos.

It's that time of the year when the News-Sentinel fires up the Wayback Machine and treats readers to its annual “best of” features. Since I rarely view my work as the best of anything, it's hard for me to compile such a list.

However, now and again I receive comments that remind me of why I became a cartoonist to begin with. Regular columnist Gwin Paden approached me a couple of days ago and simply said, “we need more ducks.” She's right.

To that end, I decided to come up with my top five “Ducks In Lodi” comic strips for 2010 (selection wasn't hard since I've only resumed drawing the feature in September after a two-year hiatus).

Here then, is a list of my top five Ducks picks and a brief word on each. There is a gallery accompanying this post so that you can see each strip in a readable size.

October 9: Philo's Declaration. Man's greatest enemy is his stomach. We like to think that we are strong, independent creatures, but throw a pretty face offering tasty food in our paths and that rugged stuff goes out the window.

October 16: Political Jerkwad. I do not hide my disdain for politicians. It's too often that the ambitions of the power-stricken politico stomp on the needs of the electorate.

November 6: Jury Duty. Yes, we the people have the power to oust said politicians, but great power comes with great irritation.

November, 13: Ego Cookie. This strip illustrates my own conflict with getting older. By this age I should be able to eat whatever I want and remain healthy. Life disagrees, and says, “Gakk-k!”

"Can you read the Huffington Post on it while listening to the Media Matters Minute as you're drinking your latte?"

"YES! Like, oh my secular equivalent of a lord, I don't know how I got along without this!"
